Young Sierra Leone Wrestlers Set Off for Regional Championship in Guinea-Bissau
A team of promising young wrestlers from Sierra Leone has left Freetown to compete in the 2026 West African Wrestling Championships in Bissau, marking an important step in their athletic journey.
The tournament is more than just a regional contest—it also serves as a qualifying opportunity for the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics, giving these athletes a chance to shine on a bigger international stage.
Ahead of the competition, all participating teams will take part in a five-day training camp from April 6 to April 10, allowing them to sharpen their skills and build momentum. The main matches are scheduled to take place on April 11 and April 12.
Sierra Leone will be represented by three young athletes alongside their coach, competing in both freestyle and beach wrestling categories.
The athletes include:
Alimamy Kamara, competing in the 60kg men’s freestyle and 60kg beach wrestling
Nenneh Isata Shaw, competing in the 61kg women’s freestyle and 65kg beach wrestling
Fatmata Binta Bah, competing in the 65kg women’s freestyle and 65kg beach wrestling
The championship offers these young competitors valuable international exposure and the chance to earn qualification points for the Youth Olympics later this year. It’s a significant opportunity for them to test their abilities, gain experience, and represent Sierra Leone with pride.
