Sierra Leone Tightens Immigration Rules with Mandatory Registration for Foreign Nationals

The Government of Sierra Leone has begun enforcing a nationwide policy requiring all foreign nationals living and working in the country to register and maintain valid documentation, in a move aimed at strengthening security and improving migration control.

Under the new directive, non-citizens must obtain essential documents such as residence permits, work permits, and non-national identity cards. Authorities say the measure is designed to create a reliable national database that will help monitor the activities of foreign residents more effectively.

To make the process easier, the government has introduced an online system that allows applicants to register, renew permits, and manage their documentation digitally. The initiative is expected to reduce delays and cut down on bureaucratic hurdles.

Agencies including the Sierra Leone Immigration Department and the Office of National Security are playing key roles in implementing the policy, alongside other government bodies responsible for labour and civic administration.

Officials maintain that the enforcement is not only about regulation but also about maintaining public order and ensuring that all foreign nationals operate within the legal framework of the country.

However, the new rules also place greater responsibility on both foreign residents and their employers, who are now expected to ensure full compliance or risk facing penalties.
