President Julius Maada Bio has honored Sierra Leone’s national athletes for their outstanding achievements in various international competitions. At a ceremony held at State House, the President presented medals and trophies to athletes representing thirteen different sporting disciplines, recognizing their hard work, discipline, and dedication to the nation.
During the same event, President Bio officially launched the Football for Schools Project, a collaborative effort between the Government of Sierra Leone and FIFA. The initiative aims to introduce football into schools across the country, helping young learners develop teamwork, discipline, and leadership skills through sports.
Athletes from karate, volleyball, athletics, scrabble, basketball, gymnastics, cycling, cricket, boxing, and women’s football were among those celebrated. The President gave special recognition to the Sierra Queens and other female teams for their impressive achievements, including their victory at the WAFU A Championship.
“I am proud of you all. You’ve shown that Sierra Leonean women can excel at the highest levels,” President Bio said, urging athletes to continue making the nation proud.
He also called on the private sector to support government efforts in promoting youth development through sports, emphasizing that athletics play a vital role in uniting the nation.
Minister of Sports, Augusta James-Teima, described the event as a milestone that demonstrates the government’s faith in the power of sports to transform lives. SLFA President Babadi Kamara also reaffirmed the association’s commitment to nurturing talent and growing football nationwide.
Through this initiative, President Bio hopes to inspire a new generation of young athletes who will strengthen Sierra Leone’s sporting legacy and foster national pride.
