Driver Remanded Over Alleged $20,000 Vehicle Scam

A 36-year-old driver, Tijan Yarjah, has been placed in custody following allegations that he defrauded a buyer in a fake vehicle sale worth $20,000.

Appearing before the magistrate in Freetown on Wednesday, Yarjah was accused of falsely claiming to have two vehicles—a 2014 Jeep Wrangler and a 2014 Lexus—available for sale. The alleged fraud is said to have taken place between March 1 and March 17, 2025.

The victim, Reign Kamara, reported the incident to the police in May. According to investigators, Yarjah was arrested on June 1 after a short investigation. During questioning, he reportedly provided a statement in Krio, which was later translated into English and confirmed with his thumbprint.

In court, the prosecution presented this statement and other supporting documents. While Yarjah’s lawyer appealed for bail, arguing that he was cooperative and had reliable guarantors, the magistrate denied the request, citing the seriousness of the charges.

The case has been adjourned until August 14, when proceedings are expected to continue. Meanwhile, Yarjah remains in detention at the correctional facility in Freetown.
