First Lady Fatima Bio Condemns Women Involved in Kush Trade

Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, has strongly criticized women involved in selling the illegal drug Kush, calling the act “a complete disgrace” during an address to the United Council of Imams in Bo City.

Speaking on the theme “Faith in Action United Against Drug Trafficking and Abuse,” she said she felt honored to join the religious gathering, noting that as a Muslim, she believes in speaking truthfully. She also expressed her appreciation for the people of the Southern Region, who she said had embraced her as a mother figure.

Dr. Bio praised the Imams for their dedication to promoting peace and unity, stressing that their role in guiding the Muslim community remains essential. She called on them to intensify their prayers for the country as the fight against Kush deepens.

The First Lady did not hold back in her remarks about the impact of the drug, especially on families. She shared that she had witnessed mothers mourning children who had fallen victim to drug abuse—experiences that continue to strengthen her resolve to confront the issue head-on.

Highlighting the role of women, she emphasized that mothers are meant to protect children, not contribute to their destruction. She urged Sierra Leoneans to stand with her in the anti-drug campaign, just as they did during her fight against gender-based violence.

Dr. Bio also acknowledged the work of law enforcement agencies but stressed the need for greater transparency, especially in how seized drugs are disposed of. She said that public confidence would grow if people saw the drugs being completely destroyed.

She reaffirmed her commitment to speaking out against drug abuse and vowed to continue advocating for young people, urging both the Muslim community and the wider public to remain united in protecting the nation’s youth from the dangers of Kush.
