Daniella Boima Garrick of Sierra Leone Crowned Miss Albinism Africa 2025

Daniella Boima Garrick, a 21-year-old model and disability rights advocate from Sierra Leone, has been crowned Miss Albinism Africa 2025 at the first-ever edition of the continental pageant. The historic event took place on June 28, 2025, during the African Diversity Festival in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The pageant, organized by the Dare to Dream Initiative (ADDI), aimed to promote inclusion and self-confidence among people with albinism. This year's theme, "Shining in the Rainbow Africa," attracted 31 contestants from 18 African countries.

Boima Garrick, who holds a Diploma in Air Travel Management, is widely respected for her activism. She serves as Ambassador and Gender Welfare Communication Officer for the Sierra Leone Association of Persons With Albinism (SLAPWA) and is also the newly elected National Youth Leader of the Sierra Leone Union on Disability Issues (SLUDI).

Upon winning, she declared her intention to use the platform not just for recognition but as a tool to amplify the voices of people with albinism. “This is about more than just winning a title,” she said. “It’s a chance to speak up for those who have been silenced and shamed.”

The festival included a week-long boot camp focused on building advocacy skills, communication, and self-esteem among participants. ADDI Executive Director Brenda Mudzimu emphasized that the pageant was designed to combat deeply rooted prejudice, especially in countries where dangerous myths still lead to violence against people with albinism.

Albinism is a genetic condition characterized by the absence of melanin, often resulting in vision issues and heightened vulnerability to skin cancer. Despite the health challenges, social stigma remains the most harmful burden for many across the continent.

Celebrations poured in from across Sierra Leone, including a heartfelt message from the country’s Minister of Tourism, Nabeela Tunis, who hailed Daniella as “a beacon of beauty, courage, and inclusion.”

As Miss Albinism Africa, Daniella Boima Garrick now embarks on a mission to challenge stereotypes, educate the public, and inspire individuals to embrace diversity with pride and dignity. Her victory stands as a powerful message of acceptance, strength, and hope for a more inclusive Africa.
