Break-In at SLFA Finance Department Sparks Security Concerns
The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) is reeling after a break-in at its finance department, just days after newly elected SLFA President Babadi Kamara and his Executive Committee met with the Ad-Hoc Transition Committee.
According to staff at the Secretariat, while all external doors to the building were untouched, the finance department’s door was forced open. The incident appears targeted, with sensitive financial documents reported missing.
The SLFA’s Head of Safety & Security, Mohamed Freeman, is now assisting police at the Criminal Investigations Department as part of the investigation. The stolen files were among those the Transition Committee had requested ahead of their August 11 deadline to begin a review of the association’s finances.
In a concerning twist, it’s been revealed that the main door key to the finance department had been taken from a security post by a member of SLFA staff before the break-in. Despite this, the outer security of the building remained intact.
Attempts to get a comment from SLFA’s Head of Finance, Ibrahim Bah, were unsuccessful.
This incident comes in the middle of the Transition Committee’s short mandate, which runs from August 8 to 22, and aims to ensure a smooth handover to the new SLFA leadership. During their first meeting, President Kamara stressed that the review process is meant to improve football governance in Sierra Leone, not to target individuals.
The break-in, however, raises questions about internal security and the possible motives behind the theft of such sensitive financial records.
