Sierra Leone Rejects Allegations Linking First Family to Cocaine Trafficker

A recent report by Africa Confidential has sparked controversy with claims that Sierra Leone’s First Family has ties to a notorious European drug trafficker. The publication alleged that Dutch fugitive Jos Leijdekkers, also known as "Bolle Jos," is connected to one of President Julius Maada Bio’s daughters and has relocated his operations to Freetown.

The report, however, offers no concrete evidence to support these claims. Given the seriousness of such allegations, a more thorough investigation was necessary before publication.

Leijdekkers was convicted in absentia in June 2024 and sentenced to 24 years in prison for drug smuggling, robbery, and ordering a murder. While his criminal background is well-documented, linking him to Sierra Leone’s leadership without clear proof is seen as reckless journalism.

Sierra Leone has recently been the subject of numerous unfounded reports regarding drug-related activities. Similar accusations have been directed at the country from Guinea to Ghana, raising concerns about misinformation.

The publication of such claims without substantial evidence risks damaging the country’s reputation and undermining its national security.
