Sierra Leone Implements New Mpox Safety Guidelines for Public Areas and Institutions

Sierra Leone Implements New Mpox Safety Guidelines for Public Areas and Institutions

The Government of Sierra Leone, through the National Public Health Agency (NPHA), has introduced new safety regulations to prevent the spread of Mpox in public spaces, institutions, and religious gatherings. These measures took effect on May 5, 2025.

The new rules apply to various public settings, including markets, shops, transport hubs, event venues, schools, universities, offices, correctional facilities, churches, mosques, and temples. The goal is to ensure public health safety across the country.

Key regulations include:

Cleanliness: Handwashing stations must be provided at all entry and exit points. High-touch surfaces should be cleaned daily. Posters with Mpox prevention tips must be displayed in local languages.

Monitoring: Citizens are urged to look out for symptoms such as fever, rash, or swollen lymph nodes. Suspected cases should be reported immediately, and exposed individuals monitored for 21 days.

Sanitation: Shared items and areas should be disinfected daily. Handwashing stations must remain clean and fully stocked.

Social Distancing: Crowded spaces should be avoided. A minimum distance of one meter between individuals is recommended. Events and services should be staggered when possible.

No Physical Contact: Handshakes and hugs are discouraged. Anyone showing symptoms is advised to stay home and contact health authorities.

The public is encouraged to help share health information and educate others about Mpox symptoms and prevention methods, especially during gatherings and community events.

Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in fines, the closure of premises, or prosecution under the Public Health Act of 2022. Health officers are authorized to inspect and enforce these rules as necessary.
