President Bio Honors Pope Francis at Funeral in Rome

Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, joined world leaders in Vatican City on April 26, 2025, to pay tribute to Pope Francis during a solemn Requiem Mass at St. Peter’s Square.

An estimated 250,000 mourners gathered to honor the 266th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, who led the Church with devotion for 12 years.

President Bio attended alongside prominent African leaders, including the Presidents of Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Delegations from over 130 countries were present, reflecting the global respect for Pope Francis and his enduring message of kindness and inclusivity.

The ceremony also saw the attendance of several other notable figures, including leaders from the United States, France, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.

During the Mass, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re delivered a moving homily that praised Pope Francis’ humility and his unwavering support for marginalized communities. He described the late Pontiff as “a shepherd of the people,” emphasizing his vision of an open and welcoming Church.

Speaking on his admiration for Pope Francis, President Bio stated, “His dedication to peace, social justice, and interfaith dialogue resonated deeply with the people of Sierra Leone and across Africa.” He highlighted the profound sense of loss shared by many, calling Pope Francis "a beacon of hope and compassion."

Following the service, Pope Francis was laid to rest at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major. In keeping with his wishes for simplicity, his coffin was made of plain wood, adorned only with a crucifix and his coat of arms.

President Bio’s attendance at the funeral underscored the lasting impact of Pope Francis' message of compassion, unity, and humility on people around the world.
