Farmer Jailed for Six Months Over Unlicensed Gun in Masiaka
A farmer, Foday Kanu, has been sentenced to six months in prison for unlawfully possessing a short gun without proper authorization.
Kanu, a resident of Bathlol village in the Koya Chiefdom, Port Loko District, was arrested on August 24 at the Bo Road Checkpoint in Masiaka. Police discovered the firearm in his possession, for which he had no license.
He appeared before Magistrate Harold Kamara on August 27, where he pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of small arms under the Arms and Ammunition Act of 2012.
Although Kanu asked for leniency, claiming to be a first-time offender, the court emphasized the seriousness of the crime and the need to deter similar offences. Magistrate Kamara sentenced him to six months imprisonment or a fine of NLE 1,000.
The ruling highlighted growing concerns about illegal arms in communities and reinforced the court’s stance on maintaining peace and security.
