British Police Training Chief Meets Sierra Leone’s IGP to Boost Cooperation
The newly appointed head of the British Police Support Training in Sierra Leone, Madam Peace C. Bakwe, has paid a courtesy visit to Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu at the Police Headquarters in Freetown.
Madam Bakwe, a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police from Nigeria, said the visit was meant to explore the future of peacekeeping support operations and deepen collaboration between the two countries. She expressed confidence that the partnership would continue to grow stronger.
Welcoming the delegation, IGP Sellu thanked the United Kingdom for its long-standing support, describing it as crucial to the development of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP). He emphasized the importance of capacity building, saying that more training opportunities were needed to equip officers both at home and abroad. He recalled that ahead of the 2023 elections, several training programs had been facilitated to strengthen the force’s preparedness.
The police chief also highlighted ongoing reforms within the SLP, including its transition from a Force to a Service. He explained that a new Police Act, set to replace the 1964 law, had already been forwarded for parliamentary approval. Once enacted, he invited Madam Bakwe to take part in a national awareness campaign to familiarize citizens with the changes.
During the meeting, the British delegation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the SLP in areas such as training and institutional development, stressing that stronger collaboration would help enhance policing standards across Sierra Leone.
