“Kono is a place I hold dearly in my heart,” says Chief Minister Sengeh
The Chief Minister of Sierra Leone, David Moinina Sengeh, recently shared his deep affection for Kono, outlining five reasons why the district is so special to him.
First, he explained that President Julius Maada Bio has a genuine commitment to the development of Kono. According to him, the President frequently emphasizes the importance of investments in the area — from Kono University and improved road networks to better healthcare facilities, clean water supply, and more.
Second, Sengeh highlighted Kono’s strong agricultural potential. Most of the chiefdoms in the district are farming communities, with only three having mining operations.
He also spoke passionately about the energy and ambition of Kono’s youth, describing them as vibrant, entrepreneurial, and driven. From his time as Minister of Education to his current role, he has been inspired by their determination to bring change to their communities.
Fourth, he praised Kono’s commitment to education. Over the years, local leaders — especially influential women — have consistently pushed for more schools. Responding to this, Sengeh said he allocated numerous classrooms and educational facilities to the district through a World Bank project.
Lastly, he shared a personal connection: his father spent much of his primary school years in Kono and often recalls those days with fondness.
Reflecting on the district’s progress, Sengeh recalled the moment they provided dozens of farming machines to local farmers last year — a gesture he believes reflects the government’s dedication to supporting Kono’s growth.
